Lincoln was motivated to study nursing after experiencing discrimination and denial of treatment due to his transgender identity.
Returning to study as a mature student posed challenges, particularly in mastering technical skills but he persevered. His achievements include securing a sought-after placement at the Swan Hill Hospital and serving as a student representative at Holmesglen.
Lincoln aims to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing and hopes to become a teacher. He actively supports the transgender community and works with various groups including Victoria Police to raise awareness for transgender rights and advocate for workplace inclusivity.
Emad Seyam
SIT30813 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery
Emad discovered his passion for cooking during his time at the Victorian College for the Deaf. He then joined The Mail Exchange Hotel as an apprentice while studying cookery.
His toughest challenge was communication as he had to learn both English and Auslan on his arrival in Australia as a Deaf Afghan migrant. Through collaboration with his teachers and Auslan interpreters Emad successfully navigated his course, and he educated his colleagues on Auslan to be able to function smoothly in the bustling CBD kitchen.
In addition to becoming a good chef, Emad has become a catalyst for positive change by advocating for inclusivity by and because of his efforts The Mail Exchange Hotel now requires all new staff to learn Auslan. Emad’s contributions have not only benefited his workplace but shaped opportunities for persons with Deafness in the broader community.
Xavier Tran
22631VIC Certificate II in Work Education
Xavier participated in the inaugural Holmesglen Integrated practical placement program at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, undergoing intensive workplace rotations within departments, and developing a range of skills. Reflecting on his progress, he describes acquiring new skills as a beautiful puzzle coming together.
Significant achievements during his learning journey include learning to drive, mastering nursing terminology and becoming proficient in MS Suite. Additionally, Xavier actively engages in tennis, chess, and drama, and he aspires to work at Holmesglen.
“Xavier's presence has had a positive impact on the entire staff morale and his effort to say good morning to every person, every morning has fundamentally made Bourke Street a better place to work at” says Lindsay Bava, Bourke Street Campus Manager.
